A Golf Improvement Guide

"The more I practice, the luckier I get." This quote is attributed to golf legend Gary Player and it holds as true today as it ever did.

If you want to improve your golf game, nothing beats practice. However, you need to be practicing the right things if you really want your game to improve.

If you enjoy playing golf in Kissimmee, then you'll want to know exactly what you should be working on.

Read on to learn more with this golf improvement guide for Kissimmee golf courses.

Focus On Hitting Straight Not Hitting Far

The beautiful Florida weather means that Kissimmee golf courses are always lush, with plenty of pine and cypress trees.

The last thing you want to do is end up in the trees. If you do, it's inevitable that you're going to drop shots trying to get your ball back on the fairway.

That's why you should always focus on hitting straight above hitting far. You can have the longest drive in the world, but if it doesn't go where you want it to, you're not going to produce any low-scoring rounds.

A good, controlled, straight drive onto the middle of the fairway is far more likely to lead to a good score than a slightly longer drive that ends up in the rough or in the trees.

Hold Your Pose

It seems counterintuitive that what you do after you shot can have any effect when the ball is already sailing into the distance.

However, holding your pose after completing every shot encourages you to think about your form and try to replicate it on every shot. Just as your follow though can impact your shot even after impact, the same is true of holding your form.

If you pull out of your shots too early, you're unlikely to be producing the ideal swing.

Think About The Wind

The predominant wind direction in Kissimmee varies throughout the year, but it's most often coming from the east.

You need to think about the wind direction when placing your tee shot. Ideally you want to be hitting parallel to the wind direction as this will mean that the wind has the least effect on the direction of your shot.

You should place your tee so that you're naturally aiming as close as you can get to the wind direction. If your drive is perpendicular to the wind, then those gusts will have the maximum impact on the direction of your drive.

Know Your Carry Yardage

You might know how far you can hit with each of your clubs, but you also need to be sure you know the carry distance.

This is the distance that the ball travels in the air, and doesn't include the distance that ball travels once it's landed. For example, if you hit a drive that travels 200 yards, your carry distance might only be 190 yards, with the ball rolling a further 10 yards.

Knowing your carry distance is vital, because if you're trying to clear hazards such as water or bunkers, then you need to know how far your ball should travel in the air. If your carry is short of the hazard, then you're just going to end up bouncing or rolling into it.

Carry yardage will also change depending on whether you're playing uphill or downhill, so you'll need to factor that in, too.

Make Sure Your Putter Is a Good Fit

You may have heard the phrase 'drive for show and putt for dough.'

It's a popular phrase for good reason; you can have the longest drive in the world, but if you take seven strokes to sink a three-foot putt, you're always going to be chasing the game.

One of the simplest things you can do to improve your short game is ensure that your putter is actually the right size. We come in all different shapes and sizes, and a putter that's perfect for one player will be a bad fit for another. In fact, the vast majority of us aren't the right height to get the best out of the standard-length putter.

Choosing a putter that fits you can have a serious impact on your game.

Control the Putter Face

Putting is such a challenge because not only do you have to execute the stroke correctly, but you also have to read the green to figure out where the ball is going to once you've hit it.

However, you can have the greatest green-reading skills in the world, but if you can't control the putting face, you're not going to be sinking many putts. If your putter face is at an angle, then the ball is going to travel at an angle, even with the perfect swing. That's why you need to focus on ensuring that the putter face is under your control.

If the putter face is changing angle with ever putt, then you'll never have the consistency you need to improve.

Practice Makes Perfect

The article began with a quote from Gary Player about the importance of practice, but it also needs to be the right kind of practice.

Hours and hours at the driving range will help you to improve your swing, but it won't help you to improve your overall game. Ultimately, the best place to get golf practice, rather than merely driving practice, is on the course.

The more time you can spend on the course, the better your game will become.
